My Review:

Knowing that this novel was written with the real events of the horrific Yorkshire Ripper case in mind, I was interested to read how the author was going to blend fact with fiction in a convincing manner.  In my opinion his brave decision to do so has paid off brilliantly. Anyone who watched TV news reports and read the newspapers at the time will remember how one phone call put detectives off the trail with tragic results. Using the concept of voice recognition as a basis to his novel, David Evans has written an excellent first instalment in the detective series based around DI Colin Strong and his team.
I had the feeling of being a secret spectator to the happenings in the first chapter - maybe from a limited viewpoint but all the time knowing that things weren't going to end well for one of the people present.  This limited knowledge had me wanting to know the full facts of who these people were and why they had ended up the way they had.
One aspect of this book that I did struggle with was the fairly large cast of characters, both in the criminal world and on the police team however the main players are all well-written with just the right balance of detail from their private and professional lives. I was pleased to see that they weren't too cliched as happens in many crime novels, with the DI having a fairly normal family life behind him: a happy marriage and settled older children rather than the broken family scenario which seems the norm in this genre.
The introduction of journalist Bob Souter, childhood friend of DI Strong, added a great dimension to this series as there are times where the two seem to work together yet there is always an element of mistrust between them as the press and police both try to crack the case.  Whether the journalist proves to be a help or a hindrance remains to be seen - especially when a family member has access to sensitive information about the case which is not in the public domain.
With the possibility of corruption within the Force, Strong has his work cut out for him to get to the truth whilst not rocking the boat with his superiors.  Who will lose out in this moral dilemma?  You'll have to give this a read to find out...
