Book Description:

IT ONLY TAKES A MOMENT TO UNRAVEL A PERFECT LIFE . . .
When Grace’s fiancé vanishes without a trace the night after proposing, her life is turned upside down. But has Nick walked out on her, or is he in danger?
As Grace desperately searches for answers, it soon becomes clear that Nick wasn’t the uncomplicated man she thought she knew. And when she uncovers a hidden tragedy from his childhood, she realises an awful truth: that you can run from your past – but your secrets will always catch up with you . . .

My Review:

Well, where to start with this book? It is written with two separate timelines which seem to only be linked by the events of a holiday shared by two families. Secrets from the teenage years of Nick and Taisie come crashing into 2018 and the life of Grace and daughter Lottie -with tragic consequences.

Nick and Grace are in a happy relationship, so much so that Nick proposes to Grace and things couldn't be rosier. Until the evening following the proposal when Nick goes out for a walk and disappears out of her life.  He doesn't turn up for work the following week and it's not long before his boss starts asking awkward questions.  Grace does her best to cover for him but eventually has to come clean.

Which is more than Nick has done with Grace. With flashback chapters back to the turn of the millennium secrets, lies and tragedies are exposed which Nick's parents are quick to dismiss the importance of in the present day chapters. As Grace gradually discovers some people go back way further in her partner's life than she had any idea of she becomes more and more concerned for Nick's safety.  This is a book which holds a whole cemetery-worth of skeletons falling out of numerous closets and the author has created some really unlikeable characters so if you like a cast of people you can love to hate then this is certainly a book you will love to get your teeth into.

This is a great book to get your grey cells working on as you try to work out what exactly is - and has been - going on;who knows what about each other and the personality traits of each person as to whether they are right to be dragging up things which happened so long ago.

My thanks to Hannah Bright from publisher Penguin RandomHouse (Black Swan) for the chance to read and review this book ahead of publication.
