Book Description:
From NY Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Justice series, M A Comley, who has sold over three million copies worldwide.
She escaped his clutches.
Now she hides under a new name.
For the past five years, Lucy has lived in fear of her past.
But all that changes when Matthew enters her life.
Is she able to trust another man after...
Should she listen to her head or her heart?
As she fights for her future, someone is lurking in the shadows with their own agenda.
And they will determine whether she lives or dies.
My Thoughts:
This is a new author for me but I will certainly be downloading some more titles now I have read 'I Know the Truth'.
Lucy Brent has a new life. A happy life. She loves her job and her boss and her confidence is slowly but surely returning after...what happened. But what did happen? Lucy and her best friend Trisha are the only ones who know. Right?
A night out on the town sees the two girls drinking together in a bar. Lucy nips to the ladies' and literally bumps into dishy Matthew - not once but several times. Is he deliberately trying to get in her space? She tells Trisha who tells her it's nigh on time she bit the bullet and took Matthew up on his offer to take her out. She shouldn't let her past control her future. Looking into Matthew's background he sure does seem like a good prospect but there's something holding Lucy back. She eventually gives in and agrees to go on a date with him but things take a strange turn, leaving Lucy feeling even more unnerved than she had been back in the bar when the two of them first met.
Then at work Lucy spots a bearded man in the travel agency acting suspiciously. He keeps turning up at odd times and in random places. Is he following her? Trisha and Lucy clearly have secrets between them but the author cleverly disguises their past, giving very little away for a good chunk of the book. Only once the reader needs to know is the big reveal made. But there has to be more to it than that to explain the sinister way events are panning out.
There are some great red herrings steering the reader in various different directions - some are clues, some are just smoke and mirrors to keep the reader in suspense. Matthew's character poses lots of questions as to whether he is genuine or if he too is hiding something. With unlikeable supporting characters in Matthew's overbearing mother and his brother Jake, the author does a great job of keeping the mystery going.
This book kept me re-evaluating each of the characters all the way - I even started questioning whether those close to Lucy were as genuine as they first appeared. I love a book which keeps me guessing and this one certainly did that. My only criticism is that the police involvement in the tale could have been more twisty, as they accepted Lucy's version of events very readily and I would like to think that in a non-fictional world more questions would have been asked.
